2001’s The Wedding Planner tells the story of Mary Fiore, aaah hell with it, Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey in a will they won’t they rom-com that features a star-studded cast of supporting actors and the most psychotic plot to grace the big screen in a long long time. With her career as a Wedding Planner soaring to new heights, Lopez takes on her biggest client yet, with a huge commission promising to launch her to Wedding Planner stardom. There’s just one problem, her latest crush, Matthew McConaughey, with a bad dye job, is the groom! We’re off to the races!
THE EDGE
Boasting a stellar supporting cast, doing their best with a horrible script, including Bridgette Wilson-Sampras, Alex Rocco, Joanna Gleason, Charles Kimbrough, Kevin Pollak, and Fred Willard this was surely a great back end payday for all concerned. Wedding Planner is just so run-of-the-mill its boring. Although Lopez and McConaughey turn in cutesy performances, the audience is forced to suspend so much disbelief that these two people could throw it all away and ruin Christmas for two families for the foreseeable future. While still following a whimsically romantic story about a wedding planner and a pediatrician who decide at the last minute to leave their spouses to be so that they can hook up with people they just met, it comes off as selfish and child-like. Even so, this was a moneymaker for all concerned. Oh and James Chambers as the Italian boyfriend is just racist. His accent fluctuates more than Trump’s agenda.
THE LOWDOWN Some of the best times I’ve ever had on a movie have been on bad ones. Being able to shoot in San Francisco with a big production like this would have been cool. Big stars in a big city usually equals overtime for the crew. Big scenes with big BG can also be fun. I would have loved to work on this one and then later delete it from my IMDb.
